God Is Not Mad At You & Here's Why
/The idea that God is this big angry guy in the sky dishing out judgment and cancer is a common one. Maybe you had a hot head for a parent, or maybe your Sunday school teacher was the hail and brimstone type.
There’s just something about a love that claims to know no bounds and be wholly unconditional that tends to freak us out. We don’t see ourselves as deserving of such a love. We get confused, and we think that God will treat us how we treat us.
The truth is God is not mad at you and He does not treat us how we tend to treat us. He doesn’t treat the way we deserve.
Jesus bore all of His anger at the cross.
He isn’t mad at you because all His anger toward sin is gone. It’s been covered and paid for.
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:10 ESV
He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2 ESV
And there is still much more to say of his unfailing love for us! For through the blood of Jesus we have heard the powerful declaration, “You are now righteous in my sight.” And because of the sacrifice of Jesus, you will never experience the wrath of God. Romans 5:9 TPT
The key lies in the word propitiation. When Jesus became the propitiation for our sins He took the wrath we deserved, paid the debt we owed, and in doing so, appeased the Father and reconciled us back to Him
You probably didn’t open this post for a word study or a vocabulary lesson but this matters because it proves that God is not mad at you. He’s not angry. He doesn’t look at you as a disappointment or a letdown. He’s not frustrated by your progress in life thus far.
God is a good Father
You are His beloved child. You are now co-heirs with Jesus. He sees you as His beloved. The apple of His eye! He chose you, and that is not a decision He will come to regret regardless of how messy your life gets from time to time.
And you did not receive the “spirit of religious duty,” leading you back into the fear of never being good enough. But you have received the “Spirit of full acceptance,” enfolding you into the family of God. And you will never feel orphaned, for as he rises up within us, our spirits join him in saying the words of tender affection, “Beloved Father!” For the Holy Spirit makes God’s fatherhood real to us as he whispers into our innermost being, “You are God’s beloved child!” Romans 8:15-16 TPT
For it was always in his perfect plan to adopt us as his delightful children, through our union with Jesus, the Anointed One, so that his tremendous love that cascades over us would glorify his grace —for the same love he has for his Beloved One, Jesus, he has for us. And this unfolding plan brings him great pleasure! Ephesians 1:5-6
You have received “full acceptance” my friend! You are God’s beloved and the love He has for Jesus is the same love He has for you!
He has no fear.
Our mess ups, mistakes, and setbacks don’t startle Him like they tend to do to our parents. You drop out of college and dye your hair blue and join the peace corps your parents are probably going to be scared. From that fear, some intense conversations may follow leading to harsh words and hurt feelings.
You didn’t startle or scare God. He’s not shocked by your behavior nor is He worried about your future. When He called your name and chose you, and you responded by accepting Him as your savior, He knew the journey would get rocky, but He also knows the end game.
We have come into an intimate experience with God’s love, and we trust in the love he has for us. 1 John 4:16
Love never brings fear, for fear is always related to punishment. But love’s perfection drives the fear of punishment far from our hearts. Whoever walks constantly afraid of punishment has not reached love’s perfection. 1 John 4:18 TPT
He’s patient
He knows more than you. He sees the big picture. He knows your journey and process. He’s aware how many times you’ll make the same mistake or choice before you get it and have your moment of freedom and breakthrough. He’s not intimidated by your journey.
I pray with great faith for you, because I’m fully convinced that the One who began this glorious work in you will faithfully continue the process of maturing you and will put his finishing touches to it until the unveiling f of our Lord Jesus Christ! Philippians 1:6 TPT
When He started this work in you, He knew what the job would entail.
There are still consequences.
Now don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that there will not be consequences for your actions, poor choices, and mistakes. I am saying that He will not leave you alone as you work through those consequences.
He won’t punish you with distance or sickness or poverty. He loves you. That’s my point. That’s the big take away. God is not mad at you. He’s not waiting for you to get it together. He loves you. Unconditionally.
