7 Bible Verses About Anxiety and Fear - How To Live Fearless

You were created for a life of abundance and joy in the Father, but unfortunately, in this life we have troubles. What are some bible verses for anxiety and fear that we can turn to find rest and freedom?

I am glad you asked.

Today we are breaking down some of my absolute favorite passages and verses about anxiety and fear. We are going to see what the bible says about fighting fear and worry. And of course, I am going to do my darnedest to remind you how crazy loved you are.

Let’s go!

Learn To Sit With Him

But the Lord replied to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered and anxious about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part [that which is to her advantage], which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41 AMP

I love this story. In this passage we find Mary and Martha opening up their home to Jesus and His followers. As Jesus is talking and teaching, Martha is seeing to the details of dinner preparations while Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus.

Now I won’t get into how significant it is that Mary, a woman, is encouraged to sit at the feet of a rabbi and learn which was unheard of for women in that day. I also won’t get into how Martha was discouraged from doing what we would consider “women’s work” and encouraged to join Mary. That’s a subject for another day.

I do want to point out that the tone in which Jesus spoke these words would have been kind and loving. This wasn’t a harsh rebuke. Jesus says her name twice indicating affection. He knows she worried and He invites her to rest by inviting her to Himself.

That same invitation is extended to you today. Hear the Savior calling you. He knows you are worried and bothered and anxious about a lot of different things. He invites you to lay those things down and chose the only one necessary thing.

Find Relief In Prayer & Thanksgiving

Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours]. Philippians 4:6-7 AMP

We see here that prayer is meant to be this relief. Through prayer, we can come to rest and be free from the worries and cares that are threatening our peace. God cares about every aspect of your life. If it matters to you, then it matters to Him. There is no circumstance too small or worry too insignificant for Him.

Gratitude is also mentioned here as an anti-fear weapon. Thanksgiving changes your whole attitude and perspective. It shifts focus from problems and lacks to a Father that is faithful to take care of you.

Jesus will, as a result, keep us from sinking. He will keep you from being crushed beneath your worries and cares when you let Him in and allow Him to carry your burdens.

Claim Your God Given Sleep, Beloved

It is vain for you to rise early, To retire late, To eat the bread of anxious labors— For He gives [blessings] to His beloved even in his sleep. Psalm 127:2 AMP

The only fight you need to participate in is the fight to say at rest. All other fighting the Father does for us. That battle belongs to Him. (1 Samuel 17:47) You are meant to rest.

Placing our faith in the Father enables us to remain at peace and be free from worries and cares. Remember when Jesus was asleep in the bottom of a boat during a storm while the disciples completely freaked out? (Mark 4:35-42) He knew who was holding His life. (We have a whole post on surviving life storms here.

Sleep is a gift from the Father. He gives you rest. Even more than that this verse implies He also blesses you while you sleep. This means that with the Father you can accomplish more while you sleep than others can while they work themselves ragged.

“He rests them; blesses them while resting; blesses them more in resting than others in their moiling and toiling. God is sure to give the best thing to his beloved, and we here see that he gives them sleep—that is a laying aside of care, a forgetfulness of need, a quiet leaving of matters with God: this kind of sleep is better than riches and honour.” -Charles Spurgeon

Let Your Roots Dig Deep

“For he will be [nourished] like a tree planted by the waters, That spreads out its roots by the river; And will not fear the heat when it comes; But its leaves will be green and moist. And it will not be anxious and concerned in a year of drought Nor stop bearing fruit.” Jeremiah 17:8 AMP

Imagine this great big tree. It is planted by the waters, and it has a vast root system beneath the ground that does down deep. Because of these roots, this tree is secure from winds and storms that would threaten to push it over. It is safe from heat and drought because it’s source of sustenance is not on the surface but deep and constant.

This tree is able to prosper and thrive regardless of its circumstances. If trees were to have cares and worries this tree doesn’t have to fear when a severe weather prediction is made.

Spoiler alert: this tree is a believer. You are this tree. You are planted by the living waters of God. You can develop your root system to grow deep in the word of God and your understanding of His love for you. You can teach your roots to wrap themselves around the Word of God so that you don’t have to fear wind or storms.

The way to a life free from worry and fear is a close relationship with the Father and a deep understanding of His love for you.

Don’t Forget, He Is Crazy About You

Indeed the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are far more valuable than many sparrows. Luke 12:7 AMP

I recently had a baby. Sweet baby Judah. I am crazy about this little boy. I study him constantly. When I nurse him, I study his face, his hair pattern, his eyes, his little hands. Everything.

I can tell you things he loves to watch while he eats. I can tell you new areas of his head that have shed hair or begun to grow new hair. I can tell you about the tiny little scratch he had on the left side of the crown of his head that lasted only 4 days before it disappeared. It’s crazy.

I study him because I am crazy in love with this baby. The Father is crazy in love with you. If it were possible to keep a running tally on how many hairs Judah had, I probably would. The Father knows all there is to know about you. The good. The bad. The stuff you’d rather He not see. The things you aren't even aware of yet.

He sees you and knows you entirely, and He loves you like crazy, and He’s the creator of the universe! When the all-powerful God of all creation is on your side, you get to rest in the truth that He will take care of you. He will protect you. He will avenge you. He will restore you and redeem your shortcomings and failures.

You were made for more than a life filled with fear, anxiety, and dread. You were meant to live in peace, joy, and abundance through a connected, intimate relationship with your Heavenly Father. Don’t settle for any less. Fight to stay at peace and rest and remember that you are held in the hands of a God who is crazy about you!
