4 Life Changing Verses for Those Who Feel Forgotten
/What does the Bible say about feeling forgotten? What does scripture say to those who feel like an after thought?
A boy grows up in a house with a family made up of broken people. His parents are trapped in destructive patterns and habits handed to them by their parents. The child doesn't understand that his parents are just lost. All he knows is they don't seem to notice him or think of him. They seem more interested in other things. He feels forgotten.
A teenage girl has had the same best friend since elementary school. They have always been inseparable. Her friend is cool and can get along with anyone while she is not as socially outgoing. They start college and her friend flourishes and immediately starts making other friends while she is having a harder time fitting in and adjusting. Jealousy and loneliness break her heart. She feels rejected by her best friend now that she has less time to hang out with her. She feels forgotten.
A woman wakes up with excitement on the day of her wedding anniversary. Her husband tells her goodbye for the morning as he heads out for work and she convinces herself that he must be planning something for later. A big surprise! As the day progresses and draws to an end he has made no mention of their anniversary. She feels angry, rejected, embarrassed, unimportant and she feels forgotten.
A Christian looks up from the struggles one day and realizes he doesn't remember the last time he felt the presence of God. He doesn't remember the last thing he heard Him say. He acknowledges that in the busyness of ministry he may have neglected his relationship with the Lord but he is startled by how far away He feels. The distance causes guilt and shame which is used by the enemy to deceive. The Christian feels forgotten.
This feeling comes in many packages. Each unique and each painful.
No one likes to be forgotten. No one likes to feel like everyone's hanging out without them. It hurts when we fill like we're nothing but an afterthought to those we love. Here are four of my favorite scriptures for when I'm feeling forgotten.
He Relates
He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes, we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:3-6 NKJV
Jesus knows what it's like to be forgotten. He is familiar with what it feels like to have the ones He loves, turn their backs. He knows what it feels like to be considered a disappointment. He's be left out and picked last.
He was left all alone in his darkest and scariest moments, therefore He won't ever leave us in ours. He will never leave you no matter what valleys or mountains you find along your path in this life.
He Satisfies
When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the Lord will take care of me. Psalm 27:10 NKJV
Even if the most important relationships we have failed, the Lord will never. His presence in our lives is a relationship that satisfies more than any other. In Him and through Him we can be full and made whole even when other relationships leave us feeling battered and broken.
He Sees
You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book? Psalm 56:8 NKJV
During his numerous persecutions, David was sure that God kept a record of his hurts and tears. David trusted that regardless of what was happening around him, God was good. He trusted that God saw and that God would act on his behalf when the time was right.
God's not far away from us when we get hurt (even unintentionally) by others. God sees our pain and He takes record of it. He writes it down. I believe we will never hurt in vain. God redeems and makes all things new. God is not the source of our pain but He is the source of our hope and joy and healing.
He Sustains
Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved. Psalm 55:22 NKJV
God offers to help us with our load. Not only that but He sustains us, meaning He strengthens and even supports us. This is not even just physical support and strength. It is also mental. He also strength and supports us mentally which is so crucial when we are struggling with being left out and forgotten. Often the aftermath of those circumstances wages a war within our minds. God's going to take care of you even there.
We are never not on His mind. We give Him our burden and He promises to support us.
No matter what is happening in your life or who has left you out or made you feel forgotten know that our God related and He never leaves you or forsakes you. (Hebrews 13:5) You are more important to Him than you are capable of imagining. (Isaiah 49:15-16) Trust that He see what you are going through and He cares deeply. Trust Him and allow Him to satisfy and sustain you.
